EthiDolls continues to seek
inspirational role models by celebrating the lives and stories of African
women leaders from history. Our new doll is based on Yaa Asantewaa, Queen
Mother of the Asante - modern day Ghana – also known as - The Gold Coast of
Africa – The storybook and audio CD chronicle her remarkable life.
Yaa Asantewaa truly embodied
leadership qualities: she was a visionary, a
stateswoman, politician, military leader and tactician while simultaneously
performing the traditional roles of wife, mother, grandmother, and farmer.
Neither her gender, her age (she was 60 in 1900), nor the might of a superior
military power deterred her from her mission in life.
Our Queen Mother Yaa Asantewaa
represents a true icon and a woman of distinction. Then as now, she serves as
a remarkable role model who fought for the rights and dignity of her people.
The Queen Mother’s traditional
Ghanaian dress design is still worn today. The authentic fabric design pattern
for royal women is based on museum archives and her lavish gold jewelry
adornment represents The Gold Coast of Africa. The dolls are hand-crafted for
EthiDolls® by Madame Alexander®.
The book and audio CD tell the extraordinary
story of this remarkable woman, a celebrated icon and a woman of distinction.
The only woman leader at a secret meeting of the members of the Asante
government at Kumasi, she singularly and decisively took up arms inspiring her
countrymen to defend their sovereignty.
Her
singular act of bravery in 1900 catapulted her to international fame. Then as
now her story resonates through the ages.
