Makeda, the Queen of Sheba, is depicted as she probably looked at the height of her glorious reign. Handwoven in Ethiopia by artisans using ancient methods, the costume is an authentic Ethiopian design with a traditional border of gold, lapis lazuli, ruby red and the emerald green colors of her kingdom. Her lustrous black hair is braided from the front to back in a long, natural wave.

Makeda is adorned with a rich assortment of jewelry. Her earrings, three bracelets and royal necklace, based on authentic Ethiopian designs, are plated in gold.

Zoom InThe classic neck tattoo pattern is a distinguishing adornment of Ethiopian women and still exists today. Hand-crafted by Madame Alexander®, world-famous maker of fine collectible dolls, this exquisite heirloom doll is perfect for gift giving and doll collectors alike.

The storybook is beautifully illustrated by a young Ethiopian artist. The CD provides a compelling narration of Queen Makeda’s rise to the throne. Her legendary journey to Jerusalem to visit King Solomon still speaks to us today.

From our customers

What a beautiful doll. My duaghter Ezuka has been in love with her Little Mermaid doll. I have been trying to get her to see that black is beautiful and that our skin is beautiful. I did everything...bought black dolls etc… nothing worked...until MAKEDA. The moment she got your doll she embraced her African heritage.

EthiDolls continues to seek inspirational role models by celebrating the lives and stories of African women leaders from history. Our new doll is based on Yaa Asantewaa, Queen Mother of the Asante - modern day Ghana – also known as - The Gold Coast of Africa –  The storybook and audio CD chronicle her remarkable life.

Yaa Asantewaa truly embodied leadership qualities: she was a visionary, a stateswoman, politician, military leader and tactician while simultaneously performing the traditional roles of wife, mother, grandmother, and farmer. Neither her gender, her age (she was 60 in 1900), nor the might of a superior military power deterred her from her mission in life.

Our Queen Mother Yaa Asantewaa represents a true icon and a woman of distinction. Then as now, she serves as a remarkable role model who fought for the rights and dignity of her people.

The Queen Mother’s traditional Ghanaian dress design is still worn today. The authentic fabric design pattern for royal women is based on museum archives and her lavish gold jewelry adornment represents The Gold Coast of Africa. The dolls are hand-crafted for EthiDolls® by Madame Alexander®.

The book and audio CD tell the extraordinary story of this remarkable woman, a celebrated icon and a woman of distinction. The only woman leader at a secret meeting of the members of the Asante government at Kumasi, she singularly and decisively took up arms inspiring her countrymen to defend their sovereignty.

Her singular act of bravery in 1900 catapulted her to international fame. Then as now her story resonates through the ages.
